I think having the images thats been uploaded and posted as a thumbnail when clicked should expand to a larger box of the image. I have seen some newer updated forums using this and it seems to help out from opening multiple windows to view a couple images.

it expands the thumbnail image when clicked making it larger to view, than u can click the x or the image and it will collapse, instead of opening in a new window, i know some expanders dim the background outside the image making the image stand out more, maybe that would be the light box?

You can already do that in bbcode.
