I often get members telling me they sit logged into the chatbox but cant find a way to let people browsing the forum know they are there.
Can we have some sort of alert to inform forum users the chat box is being used.
Thanks.

It would be nice to put some kind of alert in their profile...
So if someone search forum, they can see in profile some kind of chat online alert (like online sign in forum).
Or something like notification, pop window etc.
(Something like Facebook have - that way of pop window, so you can see who is online)
Thats my opinion.

yes yes yes this is what we do need. Hope they make this

Im voting no for this,
this is why.
We do not need something such as this, as users are in the chatbox to chat, not to do what they want.
The chatbox is only viewable by signed in members, correct?
so "guests"/un-logged in members should not be able to see that X user is online, and in the chatbox....
Wait, you can already tell that someone is online, and in the chatbox
im voting No, sorry.

Not required. Sorry, No.
9 megadread, on 14/01/2009 at 01h59
How can you say it's not required. !!!
I'd find it very usefull, so would my members.
Maybe your site is used in a different way from mine i don't know but i definetly would enhance my site.
Fair enough if you don't want it, your entitled to your opinion but you can't say it's not required, i've had members ask for this facility.

mate, we dont have to say a single thing, and ud got alot of yess/no's and dont know who voted what.
Alot of people do analysis (like my previous post) and most of the time they came up with the solution that works for them.
I post my analysis publicly so you can see my thought process, and exactly why i voted yes/no.
I also agree with sanket, it is not required, and there are many many many more features that should be fixed before something else is added!
Departing comment:
Things need to be fixed BEFORE something new added.

No !
When i was visiting member`s globes i was on some forum ( this - to be precise ) that had this. Every time someone wrote something in the chatbox - some annoying alert sound is heard. And i cant stand it.

I have the exact same problem, so I voted yes. My Forum is totally private, I chose what guest can see and can't see, and they can't see the chat. It is imperative at times that I get to the chat and can't be in 10places at once, but some sort of doorbell would be nice. Not for each post, but for when someone logs in/out would be greatly appreciated.
and for those voting no, it could be set in the admin to where you can have that option or not, so we are all happy:)

I voted yes. I can't sit waiting for someone to come into the chat when I have other things that needs to be. And since we currently have no way to alert that someone has logged into the chat or even posted a message there, I usually miss that person by the time I come back to check on the chat window.
So, having an alert sound for someone logging into or out of the chat would be nice. And also an alert sound to let me know that someone had typed a message in the chat would be nice. That way, even if I was busy, I'd know to come and check the chat window real quick and be able to chat with whoever is there at the time. *shrugs*

Ok so i see no point in the friends thing.... I thought it would be nice to have a chat like facebook.. like so you can chat with your friends without all the people in the chatbox seeing it
When I recorded an script with alerts the Selenium IDE save the command assertAlert with the message of that alert in target.
When I play this script this command fails and the button OK isn't pressed!
Both in Selenium IDE or Selenium
