Suggestion for all forums: MSN

It has come to my attention that, if someone wants to gets someones elses MSN, They have to ask the person even though it is on their profile. this is because of an error message got when you try to click the MSN buttons.

Firefox doesn't know how to open this address, because the protocol (msnim) isn't associated with any program.

Now I suggest this gets fixed. People such as me, would like to not have to irritate people for MSN when they put it on their profile.

Good Idea?

well the way I use this is that in chrome it brings up the code, and in the code is the MSN address. But I would like to see this implemented.

It happens on IE also. I looked for it and I could not find it

I vote NO

Why? Well this is an association issue with the browser not knowing what program to use to bring up and use the address in. You need to re-register the registry strand and then the program.

**EDIT

Also this link on every ones profile for MSN is to add someone to chat if they are already on your MSN

Forumotion have

msnim:chat?contact=Someone@hotmail.com

When it should be

msnim:add?contact=Someone@hotmail.com

Maybe you should ask them to change it from chat to add

Spoiler:
1. Copy the following code and paste in into a blank notepad

Code:
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\msnim]
@="URL:msnim Protocol"
"URL Protocol"=""

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\msnim\shell]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\msnim\shell\open]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\msnim\shell\open\command]
@="\"C:\\Program Files\\windows live\\messenger\\msnmsgr.exe\" \"%1\""

Replace the path in the last line (starting after @="\" and ending before \" \"%1\"") with the path to the program you want to run. When writing the path, you need to double all backslashes.

2. Save the file as Protocol.reg onto your Desktop

3. Double click the file on your Desktop

4. A Registry Editor dialogue will appear asking if you want to continue. Click Yes

5. Click OK

Now that the protocol has been registered, try the link again. You may get an External Protocol Request dialogue. Click Launch Application. The program you chose should now start automatically from now on.

Placehold....smart pants...I would of done it more indepth however that would of been by pm...

Antonio26,
Fire Fox - look in the FAQ listing (or above in the spoiler)
IE7+ - Shouldn't be a problem, get an update and they will have fixed it (according to the ie7 newsletter's)

Hope that's helped.

Would you believe it, me and placehold (craig) agree on something Very Happy

Lmao i agree with most people now a days hahahahaha

I still think the question in this forum however should be

"Should the techies change the msn link from chat to add, so that when you click the msn link it add's them as a contact?"

Razz

This would solve two problems in one.
The need for a private chatroom and the ability to use msn within the site.
Great idea.

People seem to just keep proposing the same time over, and over, and over. I suggest it's closed until maybe a few suggestions become reality, and then re-open it.
My idea is too hide forums when you create them, so you can only see the category and when you click on that, the list of forums will appear. Isnt that a good idea? Edit Dragon Man: Please don't use colours, they are reserved for moderation purposes
Maybe you could add the feature of merging forums? I've asked MrMario in this request /t93469-merge-forum-site and right now this cannot be done as it falls under database. But I was hoping it could be done in the future. What do you say?
