Topics automatically split when they hit around 1,200 threads. It's really irritating because some threads on my forum without having split all the time, could have over 20,000 replies. But it's split up about 18 times.

I vote yes. Its so annoying. I have a forum about 2 months and its already have few topic with more than 900 post. So with more members topic will be close every few weeks.
At least the limit should be increased to 10000 posts.

I don't really care either way. But just out of curiosity, how many people actually need to go back and read the 163rd post of a 20,000 post thread? Does it even make a difference whether the old posts are still in that thread?

It makes it neater. I find it annoying that you can get up to page 80 _or thereabouts...) before the topic splits... but then it splits, the old topic is down to 67 pages and the new one already has 14 pages.
When running an RPG, it makes it harder to go back and re-label things so people can read the whole thread in order, from the first post to the latest one.
At least make it split after 100 pages, say (1500 posts.)
