Okay, so I replaced some of the smiley faces with my own. However, they show up with a white box around them.
How do I fix this?

If this is how it was when you uploaded it, its more than likely that you downloaded it like that. You can edit it in a photo editor such as GIMP, or Photoshop. But I'd just suggest finding more smileys.

I don't have Photoshop or GIMP though... is there any way to do it without them?

Nope. Not unless you download them where they already have the proper modifications.
