There has been a tremendous increase in bots registering in my forum recently. How do i apply widgets such as Captcha to tackle issues like this?

Hello YewChuen
The CAPTCHA:
"Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart". have long since been cracked.
Check the ip address from within your admin panel and block if in doubt.
Here's one today on my forum. (see bold text)
This is a spam server bot running on HOSTKEY.RU IP 4x.1x.9x.2xx
Resolve Host: srx-7xx.hostkey.ru
inetnum: 4x.1x.9x.2xx
netname: Mxx-Txxxxx
descr: hostkey network
descr: abuse-mailbox:
country: RU
admin-c: HSTK-RIPE
tech-c: HSTK-RIPE
status: ASSIGNED PA
mnt-by: MTLM-MNT
source: RIPE # Filtered
Good luck
Liz.

If you're talking about spam bots then you should set it to at least member activation.
However, if you're talking about SEO bots then they are harmless. More information: /t55170-bots-who-and-what-they-are

Hello YewChuen
Enable a newly registered users group, E.g: "Newbie" Administrated by yourself.
After you have activated it, users will be added to this group, You can use this group to give members who have recently registered limited access to your forum.
To enable the newly registered group, go to Administration Panel > Users & Groups -> Groups/Group Administration. When youre there, set Set Newbie Registered Users group to Group auto-subscribe :"yes" and New member post limit to a number 1 or 2.
Go back to where you created all forums etc and in the "Forum Permissions Control" choose which forums you allow the new group to post in, This will give you time to check newbie "ip" with a spam "ip" website base, and if found on the website add the "ip" in your ban list.
I setup a code in my forum & "forum webpage using random reload" and 100's of fake e-mail adddress to trap spambots.
Good luck

Is there anyway to hide when BOTS are online on your forum? My members keep asking me what they are and it seems to make them nervous, and I'm tired of explaining what they are. If I could hide them that would be great. thanks
