Although permission setting's available, there is some advantage to having a password option on a forum. To save setting various permissions for groups (admin, moderators, members etc), it might be necessary to have a mixture of members allowed access to certain pages and it's a lot quicker and easier to publicise a password than set permissions. If it needs changing, simple change in admin and a PM to all members who need access (therefore allowing/disallowing access easily), plus if it's not easy to get to admin to set a permission for a user, provide the password for instant access.
I've used it for a family forum where all adults have a password for adult access only, that saves the hassle of making groups for different permissions etc., plus saves time on admin in adding/deleting users from groups.
It's a top idea.
