While assuming, that you're forum version is either PunBB or PhpBB2 (on you're profile)...

Go to, admin panel , advanced, display, templates, general, click on, index_box.

and look for something like this

Thanks. I took parts of both peoples advice. It showed me where to edit and gave me the confidence to experiment. I have the desired result, so thanks all round!
