In AP-Modules-Portal Management, it tells me the portal is not installed.
Do I have to install the portal and what will happen when it is activated.

Click 'Click here to install it' then 'Click here to return to the portal configuration'

but will it change the appearance of my forum page ? and does it mean I can make more changes than I can now as the Admin.

No it wont, the only thing that will happen that you'll have a portal link in your navigation and a portal page which you can modify as you wish through Admin Panel.
