How is a "service" compiled or created?

I have browsed over http://source.android.com/porting/bring_up.html and saw that some services are invoked, are these binaries compiled from C programs or java or what? Typical services like orientationd and geomagneticd are present in the /system/bin of odroid-t. I want to explore these because "exec cprogram" does not work on my ini
