Erasing Internal storage upon new flash

So you know if all data on the internal flash is erased when you create and run a new t-flash system such as the recent update? Or do you have to do a "factory reset" to clear it ? Is any data stored in that internal flash from contacts or e-mail or is all that data contained in the t-flash?

Thanks
